The EU is preparing to host Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a summit in Brussels this week, according to people briefed on the plans, who stressed that security concerns risked derailing the Ukrainian president’s trip.
Zelenskyy is also expected to address a special session of the European parliament, in what would be his second visit outside Ukraine since the war began nearly 12 months ago.
Ukraine is a candidate country to join the EU and is pressing for an accelerated entry into the bloc. The EU member states are collectively the biggest supplier of arms to Ukraine after the US. Last month, the EU began rolling out a €18bn loan package for the country.
The Ukrainian leader hosted Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and Charles Michel, head of the European Council, in Kyiv last week. Asked about the prospect of a visit to Brussels, he emphasised the security concerns associated with such a trip.
