The UK prime minister has asked his ethics adviser to look into issues surrounding the tax affairs of Conservative party chair Nadhim Zahawi and his appointment as a cabinet minister.
“Integrity and accountability” are “really important to me”, Rishi Sunak said in a Downing Street statement on Monday.
In this case “there are questions that need answering”, Sunak said in Monday’s government statement. He requested Sir Laurie Magnus, his ethics adviser, “get to the bottom of everything” and investigate the matter fully.
He demanded Sir Laurie “establish all the facts and provide advice” on Zahawi’s compliance with the ministerial code. Sky News had reported Sunak’s comments earlier on Monday, quoting him during a visit to a hospital.
Zahawi, Sunak said, has agreed to “fully co-operate” with the investigation.
